“Don’t give up,” she said.
We sat across the table and looked at her, nodding, as if the last thing in the world that we would consider doing is giving up.
But deep down, we both felt like we couldn’t keep doing it.
We couldn’t keep waiting. We couldn’t keep getting our hopes up. We couldn’t keep jumping through hoops, hoping that someone would see our hearts and give us a place to serve.
She saw through us. So she said it again.
“Don’t give up. Keep going. Do what you have to do, and trust that it will happen. Trust your calling, and trust our God.”
At this point the tears were threatening to spill over for both of us, so we just mumbled something along the lines of, “Okay. We will.”
He chimed in. “Yes. Keep trusting our God. He’s a good God. And His way is Perfect. Trust Him.”
And so we left, their words echoing in our minds. These two people, whom we love and respect so much, had given us the encouragement that we needed to keep going. Keep trusting. And not give up.
The wait was hard. The frustration mounted. And memories of the past started to creep in, bringing with them anger and at times bitterness.
But always at the perfect time, one of them would chime in with a word we needed to hear. A note from him reminding us not to miss what the Lord had for us that day. A text from her saying she loved us, was praying for us, and to stay strong and not give up.
And then it happened. Someone saw us. Someone saw through the barriers and into our hearts. Saw our passion and our calling. We were invited to come in and meet others, and they also saw our hearts.
After three years of waiting, trusting, falling, and wanting to give up, David has been given a place to serve in full time ministry!
And as we told all of our friends and family, there was an extra amount of joy in telling these two. These two who knew what we were going through, had been there themselves, and always knew just what to say. And although we are on opposite sides of the country, we all enjoyed a celebratory coke together.
Our God is a good God, a faithful God, and His way is Perfect.
“As for me, I will always have hope; I will praise you more and more.
My mouth will tell of your righteous deeds, of your saving acts all day long— though I know not how to relate them all.
I will come and proclaim your mighty acts, Sovereign Lord; I will proclaim your righteous deeds, yours alone.
Since my youth, God, you have taught me, and to this day I declare your marvelous deeds. Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, my God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your mighty acts to all who are to come.
Your righteousness, God, reaches to the heavens, you who have done great things. Who is like you, God?
Though you have made me see troubles, many and bitter, You will restore my life again; from the depths of the earth you will again bring me up. You will increase my honor and comfort me once more.” Psalm 71: 14-21
See you soon!
